The Last Days of WCAN-TV 25 Milwaukee

This write-up from the January 22nd 1955 edition of TV Guide tells the sad story of one TV stations demise a mere 1 year and 6 months after the station signed on the air. At 11:25 P.M. Central Time on 6 September 1953, WCAN signed on and became the first UHF and second overall television station in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The first broadcast consisted of workers being   interviewed while they were installing the transmitter on the tower in inclement weather. That tower was built atop the Schroeder Hotel in downtown Milwaukee.   WCAN was owned by Midwest Broadcasting, headed by Lou Poller; Poller had originally applied for channel 12, but fearing long FCC hearings, amended his application to channel 25. Midwest Broadcasting received a CP for channel 25 on February 4, 1953. Poller began to construct facilities at 723 N. 3rd St. He also signed an affiliation agreement with CBS. For almost 11 years WSAU TV was the only game in town in Central Wisconsin. They were the affiliate for CBS, ABC and NBC. All that changed on June 12th, 1965 when WAOW went on the air. WOKY TV 19 - TV Listings January 15 - 21st. This one of the last weeks channel 19 would broadcast as WOKY. On February 27th, 1955 the Station changed it's call sign to WXIX. In 1958 the station moved to channel 19. A few years later in 1963 the station changed it's call sign to WUHF. With 1966 rearing it's ugly head, there came one final call sign change to WVTV, which the station is still known as today. What's interesting to note is how many movies WOKY aired with no repeats. TV Listings for WCAN -25 January 15th - 21st 1955. This was WCAN's last hurrah. The station went dark on February 26th, 1955. TV guide appears to the listings in correct for the 4 - 5 pm hour Monday thru Friday.
